Turkish Foreign Ministry announces possible breakthrough in negotiations between Ukraine and russia

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan believes that a diplomatic breakthrough in russia's war against Ukraine may occur in the coming months. He attributes this to the increasingly clear contours of a potential agreement after talks between vladimir putin and Donald Trump.

He stated this on the TRT Haber TV channel.

According to Fidan, an important impetus for the negotiation process was the meeting of the russian and US presidents in Alaska. It was there that the russian side first openly outlined its terms for a ceasefire, which Trump later discussed with the Ukrainian leadership and EU leaders. Turkey is simultaneously conducting its own consultations with all participants - russia, Ukraine, the US and the European Union.

Fidan stressed that the current escalation of hostilities does not mean the failure of diplomacy. According to him, this is rather a typical element of military strategy before possible negotiations: both sides demonstrate determination not to look weak and strengthen their positions.

According to the minister, the main obstacle to a peace agreement remains control over the part of the Donetsk Region that russia has not yet occupied. This issue, according to Fidan, may become key during future negotiations:

  • Ukraine states that it cannot give up this territory without a fight, as this would create a threat of losing other regions.
  • Russia insists that it is ready to fight further and will demand its transfer in order not to stop the offensive.

Fidan concluded that, based on his contacts with Western partners, it is around this issue that "a breakthrough may occur in a few months." He also noted that he has his own ideas that could bring the positions of the parties closer together, but he is not revealing them yet.

In addition, the Turkish Foreign Minister compared the situation in Ukraine with the events in the Gaza Strip, calling the latter a more urgent humanitarian crisis due to the "systematic extermination and deportation of the population."

Recall that russia is trying to improve relations with the United States, combining nuclear blackmail and economic incentives, but at the same time refuses to negotiate with Ukraine and deliberately prolongs the war.
