German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that russian leader vladimir putin doesn't want peace, so European allies need to focus on strengthening Ukraine.
He made the remarks at the Warsaw Security Forum, The Guardian reports.
Pistorius said that continuing peace talks remained largely "wishful thinking" as "diplomatic efforts are not yielding any significant breakthrough" in the war.
"All this leaves no doubt... [that] vladimir putin doesn't want a ceasefire and doesn't want peace for Ukraine. That's why today we must focus on strengthening Ukraine and strengthening its defenses," the German Defense Minister said.
He added: "Our goal is for Ukraine to enter into meaningful negotiations to achieve lasting peace, and for this Ukraine must be strong. This is our responsibility as Europeans. This is the task of our time."
In addition, Pistorius stressed the need to "do more for the defense of Europe."
"NATO must become more European in order to remain transatlantic. This is necessary for our continent to be whole, free and peaceful," he stressed.
We will remind, also today, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is on a visit to Warsaw (Poland). A number of bilateral and multilateral meetings with European and Euro-Atlantic partners are planned, as well as participation in the 12th Warsaw Security Forum.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in the meantime, the United States of America is considering the possibility of transferring Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, but the final decision remains with President Donald Trump.
