India asks US for permission to buy oil from sanctioned Iran to reduce imports from russia

The Indian authorities have asked the United States to allow the purchase of oil from Iran or Venezuela to reduce imports of "black gold" from the aggressor country of russia.

It was reported by Bloomberg, citing its own sources.

According to the agency, earlier this week an Indian delegation visited the United States for negotiations after Washington imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods due to the purchase of a large volume of russian oil.

Bloomberg writes that this is not the first appeal by India to the United States on this issue. This week, New Delhi only repeated the request to allow the purchase of oil from Iran or Venezuela.

Indian oil refining companies stopped purchasing oil from Iran in 2019, and this year the Indian holding company Reliance Industries stopped buying Venezuelan oil. All because of US sanctions.

The agency notes that Indian refiners may switch to purchasing more oil from the Middle East, but this will be associated with higher costs and an increase in overall imports.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, since the beginning of the russian federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the company of India's richest man has bought USD 33 billion worth of russian oil.
