Ukrainians in EU will have to choose: new status or return home

The Council of the European Union has published recommendations on the gradual end of temporary protection for Ukrainians. The document identifies two key options: transition to another legal status in EU countries or preparation for return to Ukraine when conditions allow.

The text of the Council recommendation is published on the European Union website.

Ukrainians are offered to apply for national residence permits in the EU - based on work, study, family circumstances or other grounds. Those who cannot do this will have the opportunity to apply for other permits in accordance with EU directives.

Before returning, they will be able to make study trips to Ukraine. After the end of temporary protection (March 4, 2027), the EU will introduce voluntary return programs with funding for housing, medical care and reintegration.

For vulnerable categories, in particular people with special needs or families with school-age children, exceptions are provided for longer stays.

The EU emphasizes: the return of Ukrainians must be voluntary and will be coordinated with the Ukrainian authorities.

As a reminder, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk believes that Ukraine should provide temporary housing and humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians who return home from Poland.
