On Monday, September 22, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv found former employee of the Administration of State Guard of Ukraine Artem Kosov guilty of the murder of a teenager Maksym Materuhin at a funicular station. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. This is reported by Suspilne.
The parents of the deceased called life imprisonment for Kosov a "fair sentence".
Tomorrow the boy would have turned 18.
"We have been waiting for this day for a long time. These are incredible emotions that cannot be expressed in words. This is gratitude to the people who supported us, who walked with us to this victorious end. Justice has come. And everyone heard - life. For the murder of our son, he got what he deserves," said Maksym's mother Iryna.
The prosecution is satisfied with this verdict, noted Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
"It (the verdict - ed.) is as close to justice as possible. In my opinion, there was a probation officer who was drunk, who was high on drugs, who decided to throw himself. A minor lost his life," said Kravchenko.
The Prosecutor General added that the prosecution is ready for Kosov's lawyers to appeal the life sentence in the Court of Appeal.
"We will strive to agree on the verdict that was in the first instance. That is, the appeal can cancel, or confirm, or send it to the first instance. I believe that we have a stable, proven position," Kravchenko noted.
At the same time, neither Kosov nor his lawyers commented on the verdict.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 7, 2024, a conflict arose at the capital's funicular station between Artem Kosov, who served as a driver in the Administration of State Guard of Ukraine, and minor Maksym Materukhin. After exiting the car at the upper station, a law enforcement officer pushed the teenager. He fell, broke the glass with his head, and received a fatal cut to his neck. The minor died at the scene.
On August 14, Kosov apologized to the victim's mother during a meeting, but stated that he did not admit his guilt.
Earlier, Kosov was informed of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, for which he could receive up to 15 years in prison. However, the case was later reclassified as murder for hooligan motives.
