The new leadership of Syria has set the date for the elections to the People's Assembly. The first parliamentary elections since the fall of dictator Bashar Assad's regime will be held on October 5.
The Syrian SANA agency reported this today, September 21.
The agency writes that the Higher Election Committee of Syria gave journalists a written statement, which states that the elections to the People's Assembly will be held on October 5.
The elections are held among members of the electoral bodies, and voting is carried out by direct secret ballot. Subcommittees count the votes and announce the preliminary results.
It is noted that the transitional president will appoint one third of the 210 members of parliament from among persons who are not members of the electoral bodies.
After these procedures are completed, the election results will be approved by the president, after which the People's Assembly will hold its first meeting.
The parliamentary elections were originally scheduled for September 20, but were postponed due to the lack of civil registration records due to hostilities.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in July of this year, the US removed the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham group from the list of terrorist organizations. In December 2024, HTS led the opposition offensive that led to the fall of the Assad regime.
We also wrote that the European Union has lifted sanctions that were imposed on Syria during Assad's rule.
