Instead of joining NATO. Allies want to arm Ukraine for billions of dollars – WP

Western allies may offer Ukraine an alternative strategy to invest in rearmament instead of joining NATO. The Washington Post reported this on Friday, September 19.

The publication writes that the chances of Ukraine joining NATO are decreasing, so Western allies are considering replacing it with investments in the Ukrainian arms industry. For its part, Ukraine is seeking investments to triple weapons production and reduce dependence on foreign aid.

"If the strategy works, Ukraine's weapons industry will eventually be able to help equip U.S. and European armies, too, with cutting-edge drones and other military technology being developed in the midst of its war with Russia," the material says.

Also, instead of NATO membership, security guarantees for Ukraine will most likely include funding for the Ukrainian air force to create more of its own weapons and fill production gaps through mutually beneficial joint ventures.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on August 19, US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine should abandon hopes of returning Crimea occupied by russia and joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

On June 28, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Ukraine's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance would mean war with russia and World War III "the very next day."

On May 20, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said that he would not support the ratification of Ukraine's accession to NATO.
