US President Donald Trump this summer blocked a military aid package worth more than USD 400 million to Taiwan, The Washington Post reported. The decision is linked to his desire to reach a trade deal and hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to sources, the refusal could be a turning point in US policy towards Taiwan, which Beijing considers its territory. The package included ammunition and autonomous drones, more "lethal" than previous deliveries. At the same time, the White House said that a final decision had not yet been made.
Despite the pause, military cooperation continues. In August, the US and Taipei agreed on a large-scale arms sale, the amount of which could reach billions of dollars. The plans include the supply of "asymmetric" systems: drones, missiles and sensors. In addition, Taiwan expects F-16 fighters and Harpoon missiles.
Taipei is increasing defense spending: in 2026 they will amount to 3.3% of GDP, and by 2030 they may increase to 5%. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has already notified Congress of another possible contract for USD 500 million. Trump himself has repeatedly stated that under his rule, China will not be able to attack Taiwan.
