The US wants to regain control of Bagram Air Base in Parwan province in eastern Afghanistan. The American army used it in 2006-2021.
The corresponding statement was made by US President Donald Trump, his words are quoted by CNN.
According to him, the US planned to leave Afghanistan, but was going to do it with strength and dignity. Thus, Trump criticized his predecessor Joseph Biden for the chaotic withdrawal of troops from the country in 2021.
"We were going to keep Bagram, a big air base - one of the largest air bases in the world. We gave it to them for nothing. By the way, we are trying to get it back," Trump said.
He hinted that the US could use its influence on the Taliban movement, which established complete control over Afghanistan after the events of 2021.
"We are trying to get it back because they need things from us. We want to get this base back," the US President concluded.
Bagram Air Base. What is known about it
Bagram is a military airfield located near the city of Bagram. From 1979 to 1989, it was the main base of the Soviet Air Force in Afghanistan.
From 2006 to 2021, American troops were based at the airbase. During this period, the airfield was used to deliver cargo by transport aircraft, and US Army aviation was also based there.
American military personnel left the airbase on July 1, 2021, during the offensive of the Taliban movement.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 31, 2021, the US completed the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and suspended diplomatic activities in the country.
The very next day, September 1, Taliban supporters carried coffins with flags of the United States and its NATO allies in honor of the withdrawal of coalition troops.
