The russian command claims that the army is allegedly advancing in all directions in Ukraine, while Ukrainian sources emphasize local defense successes. Meanwhile, both sides are actively preparing for new battles.
This is reported by the Reuters agency.
On September 17, the russian Defense Ministry issued a statement that the Chief of the General Staff of the russian armed forces, General Valery Gerasimov, visited the front lines and reported on the advancement of russian troops "in almost all directions." He claimed that the most intense fighting was ongoing in the Krasnoarmiysk area (formerly Pokrovsk), where the Ukrainian army allegedly cannot stop the offensive. In addition, Gerasimov reported on russian advances in the west - in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk Regions, as well as to the north of them, in the Kupyansk and Yampil areas, where the fighting is accompanied by the destruction of infrastructure.
The Ukrainian leadership denies these allegations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed in an interview with Sky News that despite russia's preparations for new attacks, the last three offensive operations of the russian army ended in failure. Kyiv expects possible new strikes, but emphasizes its readiness to retaliate.
The Ukrainian military reports that they were able to stop the offensive near Pokrovsk, and open source analysts, in particular the DeepState blog, record a number of local defense successes in neighboring areas. Also in the Kupyansk area, according to representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, they managed to repel the attack and capture some of the russian military.
Despite Moscow's loud statements, data from the Ukrainian side indicate a complex and unstable situation at the front. Russian reports of a wide advance raise doubts, while the Ukrainian army is strengthening defenses and conducting counterattacks. Both sides are preparing for new large-scale clashes, which indicates a long continuation of the war and the need to carefully monitor the development of events.
As a reminder, the russian army is transferring maximum forces to the Pokrovsk Axis, including units from the Kursk Oblast and operational reserves.
