Trump administration approves first package of military aid to Ukraine at allies' expense - Reuters

US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby has approved two shipments worth USD 500 million under a new mechanism called the "Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List" (PURL). Reuters reported on September 17, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has approved the first arms packages for Ukraine under a new financial agreement with allies. This will be the first use of a new mechanism developed by the United States and allies to supply Ukraine with weapons from American stocks at the expense of NATO countries.

"The sources declined to provide a precise description of what was approved for purchase by the Europeans for Ukraine, but said it includes air defense systems that Ukraine urgently needs given the huge increase in russian drone and missile attacks," the material says.

Until now, the Trump administration has transferred and sold weapons to Ukraine, packages with which former President Joe Biden approved.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 30, the US Department of State approved the sale of spare parts and other equipment for the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine in the amount of about USD 179.1 million.

Recall that the Pentagon, together with NATO, developed a new mechanism for selling weapons to European allies, which will then be transferred to Ukraine.

Also, since August, NATO has begun coordinating regular deliveries of large packages of weapons to Ukraine.
