Ukraine pumps required amount of gas into underground gas storage facilities, exceeding last year's values

On September 14, natural gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS) exceeded last year's values for the first time since the beginning of the year, reaching 12.055 billion cubic meters.

This is stated in the ExPro publication, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

The report states that as of September 14, 2025, 12.055 billion cubic meters of natural gas were stored in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities, while on September 14, 2024, there were 12.05 billion cubic meters in the storage facilities, 0.05% or almost 5 million cubic meters less gas.

The gap is expected to increase in the coming days.

The publication's experts remind that at the beginning of this year's injection season (April 17), almost 5.41 billion cubic meters of natural gas were stored in Ukrainian underground storage facilities, 35% or 2.95 billion cubic meters less than on April 17, 2024.

During the injection season, Ukraine managed to completely reduce this gap, primarily due to increased imports.

Thus, since the beginning of the injection season, almost 6.68 billion cubic meters of gas have been injected into Ukrainian underground storage facilities, 1.67 times more than in 2024.

Also, more gas was injected into storage facilities during 2025 than was stored in underground storage facilities at the end of the heating season.

The publication writes that in September 2025, Ukraine injected an average of 53.9 million cubic meters of natural gas into storage facilities daily, 2.3 times more than in September 2024.

About half of the injection volumes are imported resources.

The average daily import volume is 23.6 million cubic meters in September, almost all of which is provided by the state-owned Naftogaz of Ukraine.

Previously, ExPro cited information citing GIE data on gas reserves in European underground storage facilities, which as of September 14 reached 80%, or almost 86 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

This is the lowest rate of filling storage facilities in the EU since the beginning of the russian invasion of Ukraine, but this year's reserves are higher than in 2021.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, as of August 5, natural gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage facilities exceeded 10 billion cubic meters.
