The Polish Sejm has approved a law that extends the legal status of Ukrainian citizens in the country until March 2026 and determines the conditions for providing them with social support.
According to PAP, the document was adopted after President Karol Nawrocki vetoed previous amendments to the "800+" benefit for Ukrainians.
The law states that only those who are officially employed in Poland or whose children attend Polish schools will be able to receive payments. An exception is made for people with disabilities. In addition, recipients must receive at least 50% of the minimum wage. Polish authorities will check employment every month, and if a Ukrainian does not work, the "800+" payment will stop. Travel outside Poland will also be taken into account.
Separate changes concern the medical sphere: for adult Ukrainians, restrictions are introduced on access to certain services, in particular rehabilitation, dental treatment and some drug therapy.
At the same time, the new law extends temporary protection and the right to legally stay in Poland until March 4, 2026. This is in line with the decision of the EU Council and allows you to avoid problems with employment and residence after the end of the previous norms in September 2025.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 24, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Ukrainian refugees in Poland who do not work and do not pay taxes may be deprived of assistance under the "800+" program.
Meanwhile, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said that only Ukrainians who work in Poland should receive assistance under the "800+" program, which is why he did not sign the amendment to the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens.
