The United States has accused russia of violating international law and the UN Charter by flying russian drones in Polish airspace at a UN Security Council meeting, Reuters reports.
Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea stressed that Washington was ready to defend allies within NATO. "The United States stands by our NATO allies in the face of these alarming airspace violations," the diplomat said, adding that America "would defend every inch of NATO territory."
Her speech came amid comments by US President Donald Trump that the attack could have been a "mistake." At the same time, Shea stressed that the drone incursion occurred after Trump met with russian president vladimir putin in Alaska, after which moscow stepped up its bombing of Ukraine. "These actions, now with the addition of violating the airspace of a U.S. ally – intentionally or otherwise – show immense disrespect for good-faith U.S. efforts to bring an end to this conflict," she stressed.
Earlier, Poland reported that its forces, with the support of allied aviation, shot down several russian drones that violated the country's airspace. This is the first time since the start of the full-scale russian war against Ukraine that a NATO member has opened fire.
Polish Secretary of State Marcin Bosacki said: "We know, and I repeat, we know that it was not a mistake." He also showed the wreckage of the drone with russian inscriptions and stressed that Warsaw "will not be intimidated."
Moscow, for its part, denied involvement in the incident. Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said that "there were no targets marked on Polish territory" and the range of the russian drones "did not exceed 700 km, which makes it physically impossible for them to fly to Poland."
As a result, the United States joined a joint statement by Western allies accusing russia of aggression and violation of international law. The document, which calls on Moscow to stop the war against Ukraine and avoid further provocations, was supported by 43 states.
As a reminder, the United States proposes to recognize russia and Belarus as sponsors of terrorism through the deportation of children.
