Albania becomes the first country to appoint AI minister. It will oversee public procurement

Albania has become the first country to appoint an artificial intelligence "member of the government". The new digital minister, named Diella, will be responsible for public procurement and the distribution of tenders. This was announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama, Reuters writes.

According to him, the goal of the innovation is to completely eradicate corruption in tenders, which for decades have been one of the most problematic areas in the country.

"Diella is the first member of the Cabinet that exists only virtually. It will help make Albania a country where procurement is 100% transparent," the Prime Minister stressed.

Previously, Diella worked as a virtual assistant on the e-Albania platform, helping citizens and businesses receive documents without bureaucracy. Now its role is expanding significantly.

However, the society has received the initiative ambiguously. Some social media users express doubts that even artificial intelligence can remain "uncorrupted" in a country with a deep-rooted problem of bribery.

Analysts note that the success of this initiative could be crucial for the European integration aspirations of Albania, which plans to join the EU by 2030.

As a reminder, scientists have previously warned that AI could push humanity towards nuclear war.
