Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has lost a court case to lift European Union sanctions imposed against him in 2014.
According to Politico, the court ruled to dismiss Yanukovych's lawsuit today, September 10.
The General Court, part of the Court of Justice of the European Union, has dismissed Yanukovych's lawsuit, in which he sought to challenge the EU's decision and lift sanctions against him.
The publication notes that the court's ruling sharply criticized Yanukovych's presidential term. His actions as head of state "clearly contributed to the destabilisation" of the country. The court also ruled that the European Union did the right thing by including the former Ukrainian president on the sanctions list.
In addition, the court noted Yanukovych's inability "to distance himself effectively from the Russian authorities" since his presidency and singled out his "involvement in a plan" to oust Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in March 2022.
Politico notes that the court also rejected the lawsuit of the fugitive president's son, Oleksandr Yanukovych. He is also under European sanctions.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 1 of this year, russian propaganda published an appeal by Viktor Yanukovych. The fugitive president said that he had allegedly worked to bring Ukraine and the European Union closer together. He blamed the Europeans for the failed membership negotiations.
As a reminder, in August it became known that the occupation administration of the Donetsk Region "nationalized" the real estate of Yanukovych's son in Donetsk.
