Russia increases number of tankers in its shadow fleet, despite Western sanctions

The aggressor country russia has expanded its shadow fleet of oil tankers, despite a number of Western sanctions previously imposed to prevent this.

According to Reuters, major trading house Trafigura's (TRAFGF.UL) chief economist, Saad Rahim, stated this on Monday.

Speaking at the annual Asia-Pacific Oil Conference (APPEC), Rahim said that the russian shadow fleet had expanded after the West imposed a number of sanctions.

"As there are more sanctions and restrictions, the size of the (shadow fleet) has grown even larger," the agency quotes him as saying.

He added that this year the growth in the number of tankers has slowed somewhat, but the fleet continues to expand due to new vessels replacing those that were blacklisted.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, a new price ceiling for russian oil came into effect on September 3. The new limit was USD 47.6 per barrel. Before that, the limit was set at USD 60 per barrel.

Recall that on July 18, the European Union approved the 18th package of restrictive measures against russia. It included sanctions against more than 100 tankers from the russian shadow fleet.

And at the end of May, Bloomberg reported, citing its own sources, that Western shipping companies, after a pause of several months, began to return to transporting russian oil.
