The Ukrainian military uses groups of drones on the battlefield, which are able to coordinate their actions independently with the help of artificial intelligence.
The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the company Swarmer, which develops the relevant software.
According to the publication, Ukraine has been carrying out "swarm attacks" for most of 2024, but confirmation of their regular use has only now appeared.
In a typical operation, a reconnaissance drone determines the target and lays a route for two other devices armed with small bombs. After that, the drones themselves decide at what moment and which one of them will strike.
Swarmer CEO Serhii Kuprienko explained that thanks to the integration of AI, a group of drones can adapt to unforeseen circumstances, for example, if the battery of one of the devices is discharged.
According to the Ukrainian military, the technology was first used about a year ago to plant mines, and later to attack russian military personnel, equipment, and infrastructure. Since then, drone "swarms" have been used more than a hundred times.
The officer noted that usually three devices operate in one group, but other units use up to eight drones, and during tests, the software was even tested with 25 machines.
Three people are involved in conducting operations - a planner, an operator, and a navigator. Without artificial intelligence technologies, at least nine people would be needed for this.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, over 500 people spent four days extinguishing a fire in the "Putin's palace" near Gelendzhik in the Krasnodar Krai of the russian federation. The aggressor country blamed Ukrainian drones for the fire.
