Finnish President says progress made on security guarantees for Ukraine

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said progress has been made on security guarantees for Ukraine, but added that a peace agreement is needed before any measures can be implemented.

He told reporters on September 2, Reuters says.

"We need to coordinate security measures with the United States, which will essentially provide support for this... We are focusing on these issues together with our defense chiefs, who are developing concrete plans for what such an operation could look like," Stubb said.

He added: "We are making progress on this issue and we hope to find a solution soon."

The Finnish President cautioned that he was not optimistic about a peace agreement or ceasefire between Ukraine and russia in the near future.

Stubb was one of several European leaders who visited Washington in August for a joint meeting with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the prospects for peace between russia and Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Financial Times, citing sources, said that Western countries are preparing a three-tier security plan for Ukraine after the end of the war with russia.
