Chinese leader Xi Jinping and russian dictator vladimir putin met in Beijing for bilateral talks on Tuesday, September 2, Bloomberg reported.
Putin thanked Xi for the warm welcome, addressing him as a "dear friend." He stressed that relations between russia and China are at an "unprecedentedly high level," and recalled the Soviet-Chinese "brotherhood in weapons" during World War II, emphasizing the trust and mutual support between the two countries.
Xi responded by calling putin an "old friend" and saying that China is ready to work with russia to develop, protect international justice, and build a "fair and reasonable system of global governance."
No direct statements were made about the war in Ukraine. However, the meeting itself is seen as a signal of solidarity between Moscow and Beijing in the face of pressure from the West.
The media notes that Xi Jinping called on the SCO countries to "resist the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation and bullying practices" - an indirect allusion to the US actions in the trade war.
According to China Central Television, China and russia signed more than 20 agreements on cooperation in the fields of energy, artificial intelligence and other areas.
At the same time, the publication of the Chinese television following the negotiations did not contain any mention of the war in Ukraine or the summit in Alaska.
As a reminder, analysts believe that Moscow, despite participating in the summit in China, receives limited benefits: oil and gas contracts with China are mainly beneficial to Beijing, financial corridors remain tactical, and new transport routes bypass russia.
The "anti-Western bloc" exists only in words: China plays it cool and uses russia for its own interests, while Moscow tries to create an image of parity, giving up part of its sovereignty for the illusion of big politics.
Meanwhile, putin in China called the war against Ukraine a "crisis."
