Today, August 23, Ukraine celebrates the National Flag Day. The blue-yellow flag became not only a state symbol, but also a sign of resistance, faith and victory. It acquired special significance during the war, when Ukrainian military installed it on liberated lands and under enemy fire.

On March 3, 2022, Ukrainian defenders raised the Ukrainian flag over Bucha in the Kyiv Region. At the end of March, the Bucha City Council reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to encircle russian troops in Irpin, Bucha and Hostomel. And a week later, Bucha Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk announced that March 31 is the day of the liberation of Bucha.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Zmiyiniy Island has become the personification of invincibility. After the liberation of the island in July 2022, the Ukrainian military solemnly installed a new flag.

The village of Chornobaivka near Kherson has become legendary thanks to the numerous failures of the russian troops, which Ukrainians ridiculed in jokes and memes. Here, Ukrainian fighters raised the flag again and again after regular battles, turning it into a symbol of resilience.

On September 10, 2022, the Ukrainian flag flew over Izium in the Kharkiv Region, which had been under occupation since April. The city had been destroyed by the russian army with aircraft and artillery attacks since March. The liberation of the city was one of the successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces counteroffensive in the Kharkiv Region.

In addition, on September 10, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv Region, which the russian army is still trying to capture and destroy the city. The 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Kosh Ataman Ivan Sirko raised the Ukrainian flag in the city.

On November 11, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine entered Kherson. Residents met the military with tears and blue-yellow flags that were hidden during the occupation. One of the most memorable moments was the raising of the flag in the city center.

In August 2023, Ukrainian soldiers raised the flag of Ukraine on the left bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson Region. The units landed on the left bank to raise the morale of the people under occupation and to indicate that the left bank is Ukraine. The soldiers returned, but the flag was still there.

On January 22, 2023, Ukrainian soldiers of the 24th separate mechanized brigade named after King Danylo raised the national flag over the TV tower in Bakhmut and congratulated Ukrainians on the Day of Unity.

Also on April 1, 2024, aerial reconnaissance personnel of the Guard Offensive Brigade Pomsta [Revenge] planted the flag of Ukraine practically over the positions of the russian occupiers near Bakhmut, Donetsk Region.

On February 10, 2025, fighters of the VORON 100 unmanned systems battalion of the separate mechanized brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine planted the flag of Ukraine over the Tsentralns [Central] mine in the city of Toretsk, Donetsk Region. This mine is the oldest in Donbas and in the country as a whole.

On July 21, 2025, fighters of the 123rd Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces, using drones, installed the Ukrainian flag on the Kinburn Peninsula as a "symbol of our inevitable victory over evil."
