The name of the long-range Ukrainian missile, the Flamingo, as well as its original pink color, became an inside joke among the developers about the inconspicuous, but important role of women in weapons production.
This was told by Iryna Terekh, director general of Fire Point, in an interview with Politico.
The first samples of the missile came out pink due to a factory error and were even tested in that form, but later the color was changed due to camouflage requirements. "The woman who was in charge of production then is still with us. The feminine touch is preserved in our missiles," Terekh noted.
According to her, the weapon does not need a "frightening name", because the main thing is efficiency. The missile with a warhead of 1,150 kg is capable of hitting targets at a distance of more than 3,000 km, which opens up the possibility of destroying objects deep in russian territory.
The missile's original color and name were an internal joke about the invisible role of women in the traditionally "male" world of weapons and war.
As a reminder, footage of the Flamingo being tested recently emerged. It is claimed that the missile has already been launched into mass production.
