At a joint press conference with Donald Trump following a summit in Alaska, putin said nothing that indicated a softening of his military goals or a willingness to compromise.
This assessment of the russian leader's position was given in another report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It says that putin merely repeated the formulations that he has been using since 2021 to justify russia's aggression against Ukraine. The president of the aggressor country has once again demonstrated that he has not changed his views on Ukraine's sovereignty and remains uninterested in serious peace negotiations.
Putin used a joint press conference after the Alaska summit on August 15 to recall the kremlin's long-standing narrative that russia and Ukraine have "common roots" and that russia considers Ukraine a "brotherly" people.
ISW recalls that back in July 2021, putin published an essay on the topic "Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians", in which he argued that Ukrainians and Belarusians have always belonged to the russian nation due to their common "historical and spiritual space". This essay, according to researchers, was an ultimatum to Kyiv, as it openly questioned the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
The similarity of putin's statements at the press conference on August 15 and his previous statements, according to ISW, demonstrates that he remains committed to the idea that Ukraine's existence as a state and its territorial integrity depend on its alliance with russia.
