The only reserve reservoir in Mariupol, which is the source of water supply for the city, has dried up, and there is currently a possibility of a humanitarian crisis. This was reported by the Mariupol City Council on Telegram.
Thus, it is reported that there is only enough water for 35,000 cubic meters per day with a need of 150,000, it is also noted that accelerated drying up may lead to the city being left without water altogether.
"Before the occupation, Mariupol took water from two sources - the Siverskyi Donets channel and the reserve Starokrymsk reservoir. During the russian invasion, the Siverskyi Donets was damaged. Mariupol switched only to reserve water supply from the reservoir," the city council says.
The city council also said that in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, the issue of high-quality water supply was to be resolved thanks to a large-scale investment project to modernize the water supply and sewage system. The project included the construction of a filtration station and was implemented with the support of the French Government. The new drinking water station was to be put into operation in 2023-2024.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in October 2023, it became known that the Sea of Azov had become significantly saltier due to the actions of the invaders in occupied Mariupol.
Back in the spring of 2023, the Mariupol City Council stated that the Sea of Azov was threatened with a massive fish kill due to the destruction of the local ecosystem by the russians.
