Ukraine will not withdraw its troops from Donbas - Zelenskyy

Ukraine will not withdraw its troops from Donbas, as it will lose strong defensive lines. It will also create a launching pad for new offensives by the aggressor country of russia, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His words were quoted by Reuters on Tuesday, August 12.

Zelenskyy stressed that he would reject any proposal from russia to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Donbas, as this would deprive Ukraine of strongly fortified defensive lines, which would open the way for further offensive actions by russia. According to him, Ukraine controls about 30% or 9,000 square kilometers of the Donetsk Region and controls strategic heights there.

"Putin will have an open path to both Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk Regions. Also to Kharkiv. The territorial issue cannot be separated from security guarantees," the Ukrainian President emphasized.

In addition, Zelenskyy said that territorial issues should be discussed after russia agrees to a ceasefire, and Ukraine should be included in any negotiations regarding its own territory.

On August 9, Zelenskyy stressed that the answer to the issue of territorial integrity is contained in the Constitution of Ukraine, and no one will deviate from it.

On August 8, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine and Western countries realize that there is now an opportunity to achieve at least a truce with russia.
