At least 12 foreign volunteers serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the United States, Colombia, Taiwan, Denmark and other countries were killed in a russian strike on a dining hall at a training camp near Kropyvnytskyi in the Kirovohrad Region on July 21.
It was reported by The New York Times.
According to journalists, the missile attack occurred as the recruits were sitting at the dinner tables. An American soldier from Florida, who asked not to be named, said that the explosion was "the loudest he had ever heard." He noted that he saw at least 15 dead and more than 100 wounded after the attack.
In addition, the military reported that the strike set off an ammunition depot on fire, which led to additional explosions during the rescue of the wounded.
Volodymyr Kaminskyi, a spokesman for the International Legion of Ukrainian Military Intelligence, did not specify the number of deaths, but emphasized that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Two foreign military personnel who were training at the base noted that even before the attack there was dissatisfaction among the fighters due to the insufficient level of security.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stressed that at training sites, the military must immediately respond to air alarm signals and the appearance of enemy drones. He also announced the intention to move training to protected underground facilities "as much as possible."
The New York Times reminds us that foreign volunteers have already fallen victim to russian attacks: in 2022 during an attack on the Yavoriv training center, and last year after shelling in Poltava, where more than 50 cadets and soldiers were killed. In addition, on July 29 of this year, three recruits were killed and 18 more were injured as a result of an attack on the training academy.
Recall that on the same day in Kropyvnytskyi, the building of the State Emergency Service unit was damaged as a result of an attack by the occupiers.
