This week, Alaska, which once actively maintained cultural and business ties with russia, may meet vladimir putin - talks with US President Donald Trump are scheduled there on August 15. For this, in the city of Anchorage.
This is reported by The New York Times.
The meeting place was not officially confirmed, but it became known that the US Secret Service rented a house in Anchorage for the talks. The owner of the property, who is also the honorary consul of Germany, said that the request from the special services came as a surprise to him, although Alaska's historical role as a "bridge" between countries makes the choice of location logical.
Political leaders in the state generally welcomed the meeting, but some residents remain skeptical, especially because of Trump's position and the risks for Ukraine.
Donald Trump will hold talks with the russian president in Alaska, seeking to agree on an end to the war against Ukraine. Trump has previously hinted that a possible peace could include a "territorial swap," which has drawn mixed reactions.
As a reminder, Trump and putin will hold a bilateral meeting in Alaska next Friday, August 15.
According to Bloomberg, American and russian officials are working on an agreement before the Trump-putin meeting. It would allow russia to consolidate its occupation of several regions of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, US Senator Lindsey Graham believes that in order to end the war between russia and Ukraine, the parties will probably be forced to exchange some of the territories. At the same time, according to him, this is possible only after providing Kyiv with clear security guarantees.
