Senior US, Ukrainian and EU officials to meet in UK ahead of Trump-putin summit - media

Senior officials from the United States, Ukraine and several European countries plan to meet this weekend in the UK to coordinate positions ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and russian leader vladimir putin.

This was reported by the Axios portal, citing three informed sources.

According to the sources, the idea of holding an in-person meeting in the UK arose during a video conference between US, Ukrainian and European officials on Friday, August 8.

Ukraine and some NATO allies are concerned that Trump may agree to putin's terms without taking their positions into account.

On Wednesday, Trump held a conference call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders to inform them of the results of a meeting between his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and putin.

According to the publication, Witkoff told the participants that putin was ready to end the war if Ukraine agreed to give up the Luhansk and Donetsk Regions, as well as Crimea.

According to the sources, at least some participants in the call concluded that putin also agreed to give up claims to the partially occupied territories of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia Regions. However, the next day, during another video conference with senior Ukrainian and European officials, Witkoff clarified that putin had only agreed to freeze russia's current positions in these regions.

Ukrainian officials say they do not fully understand the details of the russian proposal and the US position.

One of the Ukrainian representatives told Axios that even if Zelenskyy agreed to putin's demands, he would be forced to call a referendum, since under the Ukrainian Constitution he cannot give up territory.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President Trump announced a meeting with putin on August 15 in Alaska.
