IAEA reports use of artillery by occupiers near Zaporizhzhia NPP – MFA

The russian occupiers fired artillery for over an hour, with volleys recorded in close proximity to the perimeter of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported this on Thursday, August 7, citing Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

On August 6, Grossi stated that a team of IAEA inspectors, while on the territory of the station to inspect the spent nuclear fuel storage facility, recorded artillery volleys that lasted over an hour and were fired in close proximity to the perimeter of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

"These actions are part of a deliberate and systematic tactic employed by the Russian occupying forces. By using the largest nuclear power plant in Europe as cover, the aggressor launches strikes against peaceful Ukrainian cities and villages, fully aware that any military response in the direction of the plant is constrained due to the unprecedented risk of a nuclear accident," the Foreign Ministry stressed.

The ministry stressed that the aggressor country, russia, is engaged in nuclear terrorism and is using the nuclear power plant as a "nuclear shield" for shelling. The Foreign Ministry called on international partners to increase pressure on the russian federation to return the plant to the control of the Ukrainian Energoatom.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on August 3, a team of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) working at the Zaporizhzhia NPP recorded explosions and smoke near one of the auxiliary facilities not far from the site of the plant.

On July 4, the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine announced a blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP due to a russian strike on the only working power transmission line connecting it to the Ukrainian power system.

On June 3, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, stated that in the conditions of a full-scale war, there is no possibility of restarting the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
