According to the fire department of the village of Ashcroft, British Columbia, the incident occurred when the eagle was returning from a river located about three kilometers away and dropped its prey directly onto a power line. The sparks that arose fell on dry grass and caused a fire. The flames covered almost half a hectare of land and temporarily left more than 1,500 residents without electricity, AP News reports.
Local firefighters, with the support of farmers and employees of the energy company British Columbia Hydro, managed to localize and extinguish the fire, using more than 18,000 liters of water. The investigation confirmed that the cause was not faulty equipment, but fish.
"We suspect that the eagle got tired of raw fish and wanted to try fried fish," the Ashcroft fire department joked in a post on social networks.
"The bird escaped unharmed and continues to fly freely, but the fish found at the scene of the fire was charred - too "overcooked" and much less happy," rescuers added in a conversation with The New York Times.
