President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that for today, Thursday, August 7, he and the Ukrainian team have many calls and contacts planned for real progress on the path to peace. Zelenskyy announced this on his Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Today is a day of many calls and contacts for real progress on the path to peace and guaranteeing Ukraine's independence under any circumstances. Several of my conversations are planned, already on the schedule - a conversation with German Chancellor Merz. We will be in touch with colleagues from France and Italy. There will also be communication at the level of national security advisors - I instructed to hold this special format today," he said.
Zelenskyy also reported that yesterday, August 6, after a joint conversation with US President Donald Trump and European leaders, he spoke separately with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Zelenskyy stressed that the first step on the path to peace should be russia's agreement to a ceasefire, after which a meeting at the leadership level is possible.
"It is important to discuss key details. The priorities are absolutely clear. The first is to stop the killings, and it is russia that must agree to a ceasefire. The second is a format for leaders so that the meeting can work for a truly lasting peace. We in Ukraine have repeatedly said that the search for real solutions can become truly effective precisely at the leadership level. We need to determine the time for such a format, with a range of issues. The third is the durability of security. This is possible together with the United States and Europe," he noted.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine never wanted war and will work for peace as productively as possible.
"The main thing is that russia, which started this war, really takes steps to stop the aggression. The world has leverage to put pressure on the aggressor, the world has the opportunity to verify the fulfillment of promises," he noted.
In an evening video address on August 6, Zelenskyy reported that he had a conversation with Trump with the participation of European leaders after the representative of the US President, Steve Witkoff, held talks in Moscow.
At the same time, he noted that russia is now more committed to a ceasefire, the pressure on them is working, but the main thing is that they do not deceive either Ukraine or the United States in the details. Ukraine proposed that in the near future representatives of Ukraine and partners, security advisors determine a common position and a common view for negotiations with the russian federation.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, according to American media, Trump wants to meet with russian dictator vladimir putin in person, possibly as early as next week, if this meeting takes place, then a meeting of the three leaders together with Zelenskyy could be organized.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy and putin would be possible only if the gap between their positions can be narrowed. According to the Secretary of State, the key topics of such negotiations could be the issue of territories, as well as a potential ceasefire at a certain stage of the process.
