Beijing prosecutor general sentenced to death for large-scale corruption crimes

Xiang Ming, a former high-ranking prosecutor in Beijing, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for embezzlement of public funds, the Beijing Second People's Court announced on August 4, according to the China Daily.

According to the court's decision, Xiang Ming, who headed the First Branch of the Beijing Municipal Procuratorate, was sentenced to death with a reprieve for embezzlement, as well as 12 years in prison and a fine of 2 million yuan (about USD 278,000) for bribery. Both sentences were combined, giving him a suspended death sentence.

In addition, he was deprived of political rights for life and all personal property was confiscated. The illegally obtained funds and assets must be transferred to the state.

In China, a death sentence with a two-year reprieve is usually commuted to life imprisonment if the convict does not violate the law during that period. However, in Xiang Ming's case, the court ruled that even if the sentence is commuted to life imprisonment, he will not be eligible for further reduction of the term or parole.

Xiang has held key positions in the capital's procuratorate since the 1990s. In 1994, he became head of the Haidian District Procuratorate, in 1998 he became deputy head of the city's procuratorate, and in 2006 he became head of its First Branch.

In April 2022, he was placed under disciplinary and supervisory investigation, and in December he was expelled from the Communist Party of China. According to anti-corruption authorities, he "seriously violated discipline and the law" by embezzling and accepting bribes of "huge sums."
