Bavarian Prime Minister proposes cancellation of social benefits for Ukrainians in Germany

The Head of the Government of the Federal State of Bavaria, Markus Söder, has advocated the termination of the payment of social assistance "Bürgergeld" for refugees from Ukraine. He stated this on the air of the German TV channel ZDF.

According to Söder, the approach to supporting Ukrainians in Germany should be changed: "We need to ensure that Ukrainians no longer receive Bürgergeld." He is convinced that this social benefit discourages Ukrainians from working.

"That is why we have so few workers from Ukraine, despite the fact that many of them have a good education," the Bavarian Prime Minister added.

ZDF also cites official data, according to which in May 2025 the employment rate among Ukrainians in Germany reached 34.9% and is showing a growing trend.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the government's intention to reform the social assistance system and introduce stricter requirements for beneficiaries. Among those who may be affected by the changes are the unemployed, the low-income, and refugees, including from Ukraine.
