In Germany, a sharp decrease in the number of asylum applications is recorded, which is associated with increased control at the borders and the return of migrants who started the procedure in other countries. This is reported by Spiegel.
From January to July, about 70,000 initial asylum applications were registered in the country. This is almost 50% less than in the same period in 2024, when the number of applications reached about 141,000. In July alone, about 8,300 applications were filed, which is 45% less than last year in the same month.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced the government's intention to maintain this trend: "We want the procedures to take place at the external borders of the EU, so that decisions are made faster, and the return policy is consistent. The country should control who enters, not gangs of smugglers."
Recall that after the formation of the government of Friedrich Merz, Germany introduced border controls with all neighboring countries. According to the authorities, from the beginning of these measures to the end of July, more than 9,500 people were deployed.
Recall that at the end of January 2025, approximately 1,170,250 people or 27.3% of all Ukrainians in the EU were in Germany. Of these, almost 300,000 were officially employed as of November 2024, according to the Federal Labor Agency.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the government's intention to reform the social assistance system and introduce stricter requirements for recipients of benefits. Among those who may be affected by changes are the unemployed, the low-income, as well as refugees, in particular from Ukraine.
