Waves caused by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka damaged the base of nuclear submarines of the russian Pacific Fleet. It was reported by The Telegraph on Friday, August 1, citing satellite images.
The publication writes that the russian nuclear submarine base in the Far East was damaged by a tsunami that swept along the country's Pacific coast, according to satellite images obtained by The Telegraph. The waves caused by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Rybachiy base on the Kamchatka Peninsula, which is home to most of the nuclear submarines of the russian Pacific Fleet.

"The nuclear submarines housed there, including newer Borei-class craft and Soviet-era Deltas, are the closest to the US aside from those on forward deployment," the report said.

The Telegraph noted that Rybachiy is located in Avacha Bay, approximately 120.7 km west of the earthquake's epicenter. The bay also houses the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky naval base, as well as separate missile-loading and shipbuilding facilities.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano in Kamchatka began erupting after one of the most powerful earthquakes in modern history.
