The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) is investigating another episode related to the activities of former minister and former head of Naftogaz Oleksii Chernyshov.
ZN.UA writes about this with reference to sources in law enforcement agencies.
This concerns the illegal registration of Chernyshov's personal security and household staff within the structure of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine. These employees were allegedly assigned salaries of at least UAH 300,000 per month and provided with protection from mobilization.
This episode was mentioned in the court ruling, which became the basis for searches at Chernyshov's apartment in June. However, the investigation was stopped after a law was adopted that effectively limited the independence of anti-corruption agencies.
Oleksii Chernyshov is the sixth defendant in the case of large-scale corruption in the Ministry of Regional Development. Along with him, suspicions were raised against a developer, a former adviser to the minister, a former head of a state-owned enterprise, an official of a construction company, and a member of the board of Naftogaz. Chernyshov was set a bail of UAH 120 million, under which he was released on July 2.
On June 23, Chernyshov was served with suspicion of abuse of office and obtaining illegal benefits in an especially large amount for himself and third parties.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on July 24, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for approval the bill No. 13533 on strengthening the powers of the NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) after several days of protests against the adoption of the bill No. 12414, which reduces the independence of anti-corruption bodies, which Zelenskyy signed, and concerns from international partners.
On July 22, the Verkhovna Rada passed in second reading the bill No. 12414 with amendments that give the Prosecutor General access to all NABU cases and the authority to independently sign suspicions against all top officials.
