Trump says he was not sure whether new sanctions against russia would affect putin

US President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty whether the new "tariffs and other measures" that he promised to impose if russia does not achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine within 10 days will affect russia.

This is reported by The New York Times.

Trump's statement came just 24 hours after he threatened russia with financial sanctions over the war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, the American President said that in 10 days the United States may have to impose "tariffs and other measures."

"I don't know if it will affect russia, because he (russian leader vladimir putin - ed.), obviously wants the war to continue. But we will impose tariffs and other measures. It may affect them, it may not affect them. But it is possible," he said.

The publication noted that Trump has repeatedly threatened to punish russia for escalating attacks in Ukraine, but has not yet carried out his threats. And his latest threat of financial sanctions, as the US President himself admitted, may turn out to be useless.

Meanwhile, the NYT noted that russia still remains dependent on oil and gas, which provide about a third of the country's state budget revenues. Trump's threat to impose additional duties on countries that buy russian oil will affect China, India and Turkey and could lead to an escalation of the global trade war.

The problem, as commentators in russia note, is that such a move could cause a sharp rise in world oil prices. Western politicians are using the strategy of "limiting oil prices" against russia, trying to limit Moscow's oil revenues without shocking the world market. But this strategy has largely failed and failed to restrain putin.

Trump said on Tuesday that he was not concerned about how future economic sanctions would affect the oil market.

In its statement, the White House did not say whether Trump was considering other options, but confirmed that he "wants to stop the killing, so he is selling American weapons to NATO members and threatening putin with tough tariffs and sanctions."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump said that russian dictator vladimir putin has 10 days to cease fire in Ukraine. Otherwise, Washington will impose promised tariffs against Moscow.

Meanwhile, the US Department of State said that the Kremlin misread US President Donald Trump's patience in ending russia's war against Ukraine, and now "the time for misinterpretations is over."
