From August 13, YouTube will begin using artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically determine the age of viewers in the US. The algorithm will analyze the user's activity and the age indicated in the profile to detect minors and apply appropriate restrictions to them. This is reported on the Google services user support website.
If the system recognizes the user as a minor, personalized advertising will be automatically disabled, access to "18+" content will be restricted, and reminders will be sent to take breaks while watching. YouTube explained that it will notify such users of the restrictions applied, and in case of an error, it will allow them to confirm their age using a passport, selfie, or bank details.
The platform also warned authors that part of the teenage audience may lose access to monetized content, which will negatively affect advertising revenues.
Google announced this initiative in early 2025 as part of a global effort to strengthen children's digital safety.
Earlier it was reported that YouTube began developing a timer to limit the time spent watching Shorts. The new feature should help users combat endless scrolling of short videos.
