Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine has returned about 6,000 people from russian captivity. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this on the Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"Since the beginning of the full-scale war, a total of 5,857 people have been returned alive from captivity. Outside the exchanges, another 555 people. As a result of the exchanges within Istanbul, more than a thousand of our soldiers have been returned. We hope to release those civilians who are currently still being held in Russia," he said.
Zelenskyy said that today he had a meeting with almost everyone in the Ukrainian government team who is working to release prisoners and help them, as well as with those who were released from russian captivity - defenders from different directions of the front, and in particular from Mariupol, Azov defenders, paramedic Taira, Leniie Umerova - a civilian who was captured by the occupiers in Crimea.
They honored the memory of the soldiers who were killed in the terrible terrorist attack in Olenivka, and talked about the return of all Ukrainians home. Zelenskyy thanked everyone who is doing everything to make the exchanges possible, and everyone who helps, as well as the soldiers who replenish the exchange fund for Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 23, Ukraine held the ninth stage of the prisoner exchange within the framework of the agreements reached in Istanbul, during all stages of the latest Istanbul agreements, more than 1,000 Ukrainians were returned.
During the third round of talks between Ukraine and russia in Istanbul on July 23, the parties agreed to exchange another 1,200 prisoners.
