European Parliament may consider giving up russian gas year earlier - media

The European Parliament is considering proposals to accelerate the EU's withdrawal from russian gas by one year earlier - to January 2027.

This was reported by Reuters, whose reporters have reviewed the relevant documents.

The material states that EU countries are preparing for negotiations on a plan to ban russian gas imports from January 1, 2028. However, leading European Parliament lawmakers on this issue have proposed postponing the final deadline to January 1, 2027.

Such proposals were submitted by MEP Inese Vaidere from the European People's Party and MEP Ville Niinistö from the Greens.

European diplomats noted that governments are unlikely to agree to postpone the ban for a year, but EU lawmakers could use this demand as leverage to secure other changes in the negotiations.

For example, Vaidere also proposed obliging EU governments to impose sanctions on companies that violate the ban, including by revoking licenses for energy trade. And Niinistö proposes a complete ban on russian oil imports from January 1, 2027.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the European Union seeks to keep secret a plan to abandon natural gas from the aggressor country of russia by the end of 2027.
