US President Donald Trump is withdrawing the United States from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told CNN on Tuesday, July 22.
"President Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from UNESCO — which supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes that are totally out-of-step with the commonsense policies that Americans voted for in November," Kelly said.
In addition, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce added that continued participation in UNESCO is not in the "national interest" of the United States. This decision by Trump will take effect on December 31, 2026. CNN writes that the United States was a founding member of UNESCO in 1945, but withdrew from the organization in 1984, citing financial mismanagement and bias against US interests.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in October 2017, the United States announced its withdrawal from UNESCO.
In December 2017, Israel officially notified UNESCO of its withdrawal.
The United States and Israel officially left UNESCO in 2019.
