Amount of cash in circulation increases by UAH 37.5 billion to UAH 860 billion in H1

As of July 1 of this year, the amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine increased by 4.6% (or by UAH 37.5 billion) since the beginning of the year and amounted to UAH 805.1 billion. The NBU has said this in a statement, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

So, if the first quarter of the year was characterized by the withdrawal of cash from circulation, then in the second quarter the demand for cash revived somewhat.

This has become a trend that is observed almost every year and is explained by seasonality.

There are 2.6 billion banknotes in circulation for a total of UAH 851.2 billion, as well as 15 billion coins (excluding commemorative and investment) for a total of UAH 8.5 billion.

As of July 1, 2025, there were 63 banknotes and 189 payment, exchange and circulation coins per resident of Ukraine (as of January 1, 2025 - 63 and 186 pcs. respectively).

Among banknotes, the most in circulation is the 500-hryvnia banknote, the least - the 50-hryvnia denomination (27.3% and 4.4% of the total number in circulation, respectively).

Regarding coins, let us recall that today there are change and circulation coins in cash circulation. Circulation coins come in four denominations – 1, 2, 5 and 10 hryvnias.

Of these, the most in circulation are coins with a denomination of 1 hryvnia, the least – coins with a denomination of 10 hryvnias (4.4% and 2% of the total number in circulation, respectively).

There are two denominations of change coins – these are coins with a denomination of 10 and 50 kopecks (27.5% and 9.1% of the total number in circulation, respectively).

While the role of coins with a denomination of 10 kopecks in cash payments for goods and services is gradually decreasing, there is a steady demand for coins with a denomination of 50 kopecks, in particular from the trade sector.

This, in turn, affects the volume of banks' support with change coins. After all, the National Bank's task is to ensure the convenience of cash payments for citizens and businesses.

The dynamics of the volume of banknotes and coins in circulation shows that the highest growth rate in the first half of 2025 was for banknotes with a denomination of 1,000 hryvnias and coins with a denomination of 10 hryvnias.

Their share in the total quantity in circulation increased by 2.2% and 0.2%, respectively, compared to the beginning of this year.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in June the population bought currencies by USD 321.9 million more than it sold.
