The Cabinet of Ministers has merged the Ministry of Strategic Industries with the Ministry of Defense.
Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this on the Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"Today, the Government has merged the Ministry of Strategic Industries with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. This decision creates a single space for defense management and strengthens the coordination and interaction of all its elements," he said.
Shmyhal noted that the institutional functions of the Ministry of Strategic Industries will be integrated into the structure of the Ministry of Defense, in particular, the functions of attracting investments in the defense industry, cooperation with partners in the defense sector, including joint weapons production.
He assured that all organizational procedures will be completed as soon as possible so that the relevant structural units within the Ministry of Defense can work at full capacity.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 17, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Denys Shmyhal, who previously held the position of Prime Minister, as Minister of Defense in the new government of Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.
The Cabinet of Ministers created the Ministry of Strategic Industries in July 2020.
On July 16, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the new head of the Ukrainian Defense Industry Concern (formerly Ukroboronprom) will be Herman Smetanin, who headed the Ministry of Strategic Industries, and the strategic industries, which were previously the responsibility of the Ministry of Strategic Industries, will be transferred to the Ministry of Defense.
