US postpones delivery of Patriot air defense systems to Switzerland, shifting priority to Ukraine

The United States has notified Switzerland of a delay in the delivery of MIM-104 Patriot air defense systems due to a shift in priority to Ukraine.

The Swiss Ministry of Defense reported this on Thursday, July 17.

The department said that in 2022, Switzerland ordered five Patriot air defense systems from the United States. Deliveries were to begin in 2027 and end in 2028.

On July 16, the US Department of Defense notified the Swiss Ministry of Defense, Civil Defense and Sport that due to Washington's new priorities, the delivery of air defense systems would be postponed.

"Following this decision, which is in accordance with the usual procurement agreements (Foreign Military Sales), Switzerland will receive its systems later than planned. It is currently unclear how many systems will be affected and whether the delivery of guided missiles will also be affected," the message said.

Switzerland cannot yet make any statements regarding the postponement of deliveries and the consequences of this decision for the country, as the situation requires additional clarification.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 14, US President Donald Trump announced that Ukraine would receive 17 Patriot air defense systems.

Yesterday, July 16, Trump announced that the first Patriot air defense systems are already in the process of being sent to Ukraine.

Recall, Military Watch Magazine wrote that the supply of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine will be delayed due to small stocks of ammunition for them in the United States.
