German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will sign an agreement that includes a clause on mutual assistance in the event of an armed attack.
According to Bloomberg, Merz and Starmer intend to sign the relevant document today, July 17.
An unnamed German official told the agency that Berlin and London are concluding a mutual defense agreement not only because of the growing threat from russia. European countries are increasingly concerned about whether the United States remains committed to the principle of collective defense of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
According to him, although the treaty between Germany and Great Britain does not provide for a replacement for this principle, the document is important for Berlin because London is one of two owners of nuclear weapons in Europe.
According to Bloomberg, the agreement that Merz and Starmer are to sign today does not mention nuclear weapons.
However, the day before, London announced that Germany and the United Kingdom would agree on the supply of a missile system with a range of 2,000 kilometers.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 14 of this year, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris was ready to begin discussions on deploying its nuclear weapons on the territory of Poland.
Shortly before that, Macron said that France was ready to send troops to Poland in the event of armed aggression from russia.
Recall, in June 2024, it became known that Germany, France and Poland intend to form a coalition to jointly develop long-range weapons.
