President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the decision to appoint Olha Stefanishyna, who in the government of Denys Shmyhal held the position of Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration - Minister of Justice, to the position of Ambassador to the United States, as well as to appoint her as the President's Special Envoy for the Development of Cooperation with the United States of America. Zelenskyy announced this on the social network X, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"I signed a decree appointing Olha Stefanishyna as the President of Ukraine's Special Envoy for the Development of Cooperation with the United States of America. In this status, Olha will work in order not to lose momentum in relations with America, while all the proper procedures for approving her candidacy for the position of Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States with Washington are ongoing," he said.
Zelenskyy called her work in the government in the direction of European and Euro-Atlantic integration successful.
He also noted that Stefanyshyna participated in negotiations with the United States on a new format of economic cooperation and the creation of the Ukrainian-American Investment Fund for Reconstruction.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Zelenskyy previously reported that he was considering appointing Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to the post of Ambassador to the United States instead of Oksana Markarova.
Yaroslav Zhelezniak, MP from the Holos faction, reported on the Telegram channel that, according to him, Umerov's candidacy for the post of Ambassador was not approved by Washington, Stefanishyna is now being considered for this position, and Umerov may be appointed to the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).
In February 2021, Zelenskyy appointed Oksana Markarova as Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States instead of Volodymyr Yelchenko.
