Despite the fact that US President Donald Trump has changed his rhetoric on russia and its ruler Vladimir Putin in recent days, Europe doubts that this is evidence that the US administration is now taking a pro-Ukrainian position.
It was reported by the Financial Times.
Two unnamed senior officials told the publication that while Trump's recent statements have given Europe "some hope" for a possible shift in his position, there are currently no real signs that the White House is taking a more pro-Kyiv position.
According to the publication's interlocutors, Ukraine's Western allies still believe that Trump is inclined to see putin as his main partner in negotiations on any settlement, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the main obstacle to concluding a viable peace agreement.
"There is a little excitement about the change in tone. But we don't see it translating into any serious action," one of the officials said.
However, the publication notes that Zelenskyy has been getting along better with Trump recently.
The publication's sources said that after the dispute between Trump and Zelenskyy in the Oval Office, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer advised the Ukrainian President to change his approach to relations with the head of the White House.
Macron and Starmer suggested that he express his sincere gratitude to him and always thank Washington for its support, the interlocutors noted.
At the same time, the publication adds that Zelenskyy is still dealing with an administration in which skepticism about helping Kyiv is deeply rooted - both from those who believe that the United States should focus more on Asia, rather than Europe, and from others who adhere to a philosophical position of non-interference.
