US President Donald Trump has agreed to sign a bill on tough sanctions against russia, but insists that the decision on their implementation remains at his discretion.
According to Politico, the Trump administration supports the initiative of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, but demands that the president have the right to independently decide to lift or postpone the restrictions without the intervention of Congress.
"The administration is not going to be micromanaged by the Congress on the president's foreign policy. The bill needs a waiver authority that is complete," explained a White House representative.
The bill proposes, in particular, a 500% tariff on countries that buy russian oil and uranium. Graham agreed to modify it to partially take into account Trump's demands.
According to sources, Trump's position is due to his disappointment with the actions of putin, who rejected US attempts to achieve a cessation of hostilities. "For the president now, he has invested his own reputation of being able to negotiate anything anywhere, and Putin has made him look foolish," one adviser said.
Despite broad support for the bill in Congress, many Republicans are waiting for Trump's own explicit approval. "I know Lindsey has said now he's in favor of it … [but] I just want to get clued into what his thinking on it," said Sen. Josh Hawley.
On July 8, Trump said putin was "feeding him complete nonsense" and promised him a "surprise." He also added that he was "taking a very serious look" at Graham's sanctions bill.
The Senate is tentatively scheduled to take up the bill in late July.
Recall that russia and India were unable to launch a joint helicopter production plant due to sanctions.
