EU preparing toughest sanctions against russia in 3 years – Barrot

The European Union is preparing a new package of the toughest sanctions against russia since the start of the full-scale invasion, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said. According to him, the sanctions are being developed at the initiative of France and in coordination with US senators.

Barrot said this in a comment to the French TV channel TF1.

The minister noted that after US President Donald Trump's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which was supported by Ukraine, the number of russian attacks on Ukrainian cities increased fivefold.

"This cannot continue, it must stop. To achieve this, in coordination with US senators, Europe is preparing to introduce, based on French proposals, the toughest sanctions that we have introduced in the last three years. They will directly deplete the resources that allow Vladimir Putin to continue his war," he said.

Barrot clarified that the focus of the new sanctions package will be not only the energy sector and revenues from oil exports, but also financial players in russia and abroad - legal entities and individuals who help the kremlin circumvent restrictions.

"Putin is no longer advancing on the front and is now limited to shelling residential areas with drones and missiles. This leads to numerous casualties among the civilian population. This must stop," the minister emphasized.

As a reminder, Britain has imposed new sanctions against russia for using chemical weapons in the war with Ukraine.
