Texas tragedy: flash floods kill over 40, including 15 children

At least 43 people, including 15 children, have been killed in flash floods in central Texas (USA). Reuters reports.

A massive rescue operation is underway, with dozens of people, including tourists and locals, still missing.

Authorities warn that the death toll could rise as the disaster has affected other regions outside the main disaster zone, Kerr County. Four people have been confirmed killed in neighboring Travis County, and 13 are missing. One death has also been reported in Kendall County.

The flooding came after a powerful storm dumped up to 15 inches of rain on the Guadalupe River, about 87 miles northwest of San Antonio. The rapid rise in water levels - up to 30 feet - swept people away.

More than 850 people were rescued. Some were clinging to trees as they waited for help.

Among the missing are 27 girls from Camp Mystic. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leita said 17 bodies, including five children, are still unaccounted for.

Central Texas, particularly the so-called Mountain Country, is known for its scenic beauty and historic towns. Many people came to the region to celebrate Independence Day by the river. In total, almost half of the annual rainfall fell in one day.

"We don't know how many people were in tents, trailers or rented houses along the river," said Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.
